Abstract

The MESSAGE project is a #4.1 million research campaign in the UK aimed at reducing traffic pollution through the use of mobile sensors. The goal is to use vehicles as mobile sensors, collecting real time air quality data. The project was launched by the Department for Transport and is an important part of the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's e-Science Programme. Imperial College, London, is project leader, and Cambridge, Leeds, Newcastle and Southampton Universities are also involved. LogicaCMG will contribute to the communications and processing elements of the project. No decision has been taken on the communications medium that will be used in the project. The sensors will be fitted to public buses and other vehicles They will be able to identify driving behaviour and recurring trends. The project results could be used to influence driving behaviour. The sensors will be trialled in the areas involved in the research project.
