Abstract

The paper describes development work carried out into the all-mechanical airbag module using computer based VODS1 and VODS2 simulations (Vehicle Occupant Dynamics Simulator) to predict occupant injuries in various situations. Sensors were developed with a response curve that would not deploy the airbag in minor accidents but would allow deployment in sufficient time to maintain injury levels below those specified in FMVSS 208. Development work using the all-mechanical airbag module in many crash situations and types of vehicles is described.
