Abstract

This article describes the redecking of 3 bridges, plus minor deck repair on a 4th, along the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Langley, Virginia. The project provides an informative case study of how meticulous planning, the use of modern engineering methods, and well-coordinated execution ensure that a complex construction effort can be carried out without major disruption to traffic flow. A key aspect of the rehabilitation was the use of precast panels that helped reduce the number of days traffic was affected to just 10 weekends, vs. the several months normally required by traditional techniques.
