Abstract

Extensive and increasing dipped beam usage is given as the greatest single cause of inadequate sign brightness. Other reasons include: dirt, faulty headlamps and overloaded cars, the ageing of signs, and defective eyesight. The effectiveness of some of the reflective materials used on road signs is discussed.
