Abstract

The problem of the possible excessive brightness caused by illuminated signs and facias have recently been tackled by ESMA- the Electrical Sign Manufacture Association- who have issued a code for practice suggesting brightness limits for signs of various types of location. This note has been prepared to help sign manufacturers to implement the code. Factors affecting the brightness of signs are discussed and design data are given for a wide variety of signs using "Perspex" acrylic sheet.
