Abstract

In this paper, in a hypothetical study of two towns, one in Germany, the other in England, differences in approaches to traffic calming are discussed. Key differences in approach relate to: (1) the organisation of local government; (2) a longer term of adoption of traffic calming (some 20 years) in Germany; (3) a different infrastructure in terms of the road network and public transport facilities, in particular light rail or modern bus systems; and (4) detailed research of practical traffic calming is well established in Germany.
