In this paper, traffic calming measures operating in Shenley Road in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire are described. The measures were derived partly, from examining practice in a number of Dutch and German towns - Haarlem, Volendam, Almelo, Hengelo, and Enschede in Holland, and Dulmen, Erkelenz, Ubach and Langenfeld in West Germany. After widespread publicity of traffic calming proposals in the local community the pilot scheme in Shenley Road has the following features: road width reduced to eight metres to give two carriageways; defined parking bays; illegal parking eliminated by design; new pedestrian priority crossing points; large central refuges for pedestrian safety; new bus lay by designs; increased pavement areas; new planted areas; dropped kerbs to help disabled persons; and roundabouts replacing traffic signals at two junctions. The costs of this pilot scheme amount to sixty thousand pounds, a detailed attitude survey is planned after six months in use.
