Abstract

In December 1997, the AASHTO Executive Board endorsed a Strategic Highway Safety Plan that was developed by the AASHTO Standing Committee on Highway Traffic Safety. The structure is briefly presented in this paper. Out of the 22 topic areas four is highlighted as examples of the 92 strategies associated with the topic areas. The plan itself provides a benchmark that agencies can use to assess their current safety agenda. It also identifies areas where transportation officials need to work with other agencies to achieve the goal of safer highways. The plan provides a basis for adjusting priorities in capital funding and research.
