Abstract

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) launched its new Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) initiative in 2004 to deploy and enable a communications infrastructure to support wireless vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The 5.9 GHz band has been allocated for Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) between vehicles. The channellisation of the 75 MHz of DSRC spectrum is explained. Motorola has been running VII-related tests of its 5.9 GHz-compliant MOTODRIVE roadside network architecture. The place of MOTODRIVE in VII is discussed and the ability of the system to operate on all available 10 MHz channels is described.
