Abstract

High speed FM subcarrier is the least expensive and most effective way to broadcast Advanced Traveller Information Services (ATIS). Information content, transmission capability and receiver/display technologies are now available to make the dissemination of ATIS a sustainable, commercial venture. This paper presents an overview of: (1) ATIS information content that consumers want to receive; (2) a comparison of three competing high speed FM subcarrier systems for disseminating that information to fixed and mobile receivers; (3) field tests of the three systems currently operating in the U.S.; and (4) display devices that are affordably priced and readily available to consumers.
