Building evacuation: two different approaches.

Abstract

According to the Engineering Guide to Human Behaviour in Fire, a buildingevacuation is successful if the Available Safe Egress Time (time between catastrophe and onset of untenable conditions in the building) is longer than the Required Safe Evacuation Time (time needed for the last pedestrianto leave a building). There are two different approaches for reducing theevacuation time: adapting the building environment to pedestrian behaviour (person approach) and controlling pedestrian behaviour to make best possible use of a given building (system approach). The different phases of anevacuation process are outlined. The actions that could be taken for reducing each component of the evacuation time are considered in relation to the person and system approaches and pre-movement time, time to travel to and through exits, pedestrian movement and wayfinding.
