Abstract

Although in the past a traffic-related death would precede improvements for pedestrians, according to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC), this has all changed. People are looking to live in healthier communities where they can walk and bike. Citizens are demanding that engineers go back and make pedestrian related improvements. This article reviews pedestrian related safety problems and crashes. The article also introduces the "Pedestrian Facilities User Guide", which was released by PBIC in hopes to improve pedestrian safety by helping planners and engineers identify problems and choose improvements.
