Abstract

The Government's road safety strategy, Tomorrow's Roads - Safer for Everyone, set a framework for improving road safety for the next 10 years, focusing on targets to significantly reduce the number of casualties by 2010. Effective road safety education is integral to achieving this target. In 2006, the Department for Transport commissioned research to identify how to improve the quality and delivery of road safety education, training and publicity (RSETP), especially in schools, and to find ways to raise the status of road safety education. The research was intended to identify how road safety officers (RSOs) and educators can work together better to maximise the delivery of high-quality road safety education. This report presents the findings from that research; the document contains sections as follows: Background and introduction; Literature review; Research findings: current practice; Research findings: the need for change; and Discussion and recommendations.
