Abstract

The paper's main objective is to present the situation of safety of buses and coaches in Spain, describing the principal lines of action taken by the Spanish Administration and Research centres in recent years to improve this situation. Statistical data of accidents are offered, from 1984 to 1990, together with a comparison of results with other modes of transport, mainly with the railway and air. The main lines of intervention of the Spanish Administration in vehicle approvals are described, with special mention to the Technical and Administrative Services involved in type approval and to the vehicle "in-service" periodical Inspections. Finally a summary is given of the main research lines being developed in Spain, affecting bus and coach safety. (A)
