Abstract

TRRL has monitored the effects of the 1985 Transport Act, which deregulated bus services in Great Britain outside London. In order to provide information for the many different aspects of the research programme, TRRL assembled a computerised database containing details of every registered bus service. The database is called the Bus Registration Index (BRI). The research programme is now coming to an end and TRRL has completed the coding and validation of the data. Information in the BRI has been restructured to make it more generally available to researchers. This report describes the origin of the BRI, gives an overview of the design of the database and contains some of the key analyses for which it has been used. A comparison has been made with national statistics. The report also describes the information being made available. (A)
