This booklet contains eight examples of road planning in urban areas and 28 examples of speed restraint designs. These examples are related to booklets 0 and VII of the series respectively. Most of the examples are presented in the form where basic assumptions are described on one side of a folder and the result of the planning briefly described with diagrams on the other side. Each example is based on a specific implemented project, but some have been elaborated to illustrate a larger range of considerations. The examples of road planning in urban areas include those of a market town, a relatively old detached house area, a traffic-differentiated residential area, a station town and a new development of blocks of flats. Examples are also given of planning in high and low density development. A wide range of speed restraints are illustrated. These are divided into the 12 principal types given in booklet VII. These include preliminary warnings such as rumble areas and signing and gateways. Illustrations are given of the use of a raised plateau with ramps and the use of circular bumps. Examples are given of several types of offsettings and narrowings used singly or in combination. Cycle sluices are used on many of the examples given of the use of narrowings.
