Abstract

Whitchurch is one of the six towns selected by the Department of Transport for its 'Bypass Demonstration Project'. The aim is to show how the benefits of a bypass can be increased by means of complementary measures within town centres. In Whitchurch, this means using the spare capacity on the former A41 trunk road to allow traffic to be displaced from the main shopping streets. These will then be subject to a comprehensive traffic calming and environmental improvement scheme. The paper describes how the former trunk road is being adapted to fulfil its new function. It also describes measures designed to discourage residual through traffic and help pedestrians and cyclists on the old trunk road. (A)
