Abstract

The "crash worthiness" of an automobile in a frontal collision is dependent upon the structural design of the front area. For such a collision with a fixed barrier, different designs will yield different deceleration curves. It is the purpose of this paper to apply optimal control theory to the selection of those deceleration curves that minimize various functions of the resulting belt force in a simplified vehicle-passenger model.
