Abstract

A quantitative mathematical model of the control method, the behaviour of the traffic and the structure of the area to be controlled is constructed. The criterion used to judge the effectiveness of the control system is mathematically expressed. This criterion used is the mean total delay that each car incurs. Averaging includes all cars at all intersections, so that the optimum is applicable to the control system as a whole.
