Abstract

This paper was presented at the session titled `New technologies in traffic engineering'. The 'Intelligent Transportation Systems" (ITS) area has been a hot bed of activity in the past few years. ITS continues to expand and the awareness of public officials and the general public are on the rise. In common with many other major cities in North America and around the world, the City of Calgary is watching the developments in the ITS arena and plans to implement those technologies that are effective and affordable. In this vein, the City replaced its 20 year old Honeywell Signal Control Computer with the new MIST system in 1997. All field equipment under central control were also replaced or will be replaced in the next 2 years. This paper will discuss some of the issues and procedures that were followed in selecting the MIST system, as well as some of the ITS type projects that are underway in Calgary or are in the planning stages.
