CALM : the newits communication concept.

Abstract

CALM is the new ITS communications concept being standardized by ISO TC204/WG16. The overall system provisions can be summarized as follows: (1) Support of multiple media, e.g. cellular networks and Wireless LANs; (2) Support of "continuous communications" along the road as well as "hot spots"; (3) Support networking and handover spanning several media (4) Support of Internet as well as dedicated ITS (CEN/ISO) applications; (5) Support relevant IEEE 802.11 and ETSI Hiperlan modes for the 5 GHz medium; (6) Support of both vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure communications for some media; (7) Will co-exist with current 5.8/5.9 GHz DSRC solutions. CALM has received an unusually large support from countries all around the world, and the work is progressing quickly.
