The history of provision for cycling in Cambridge is outlined. The findings and proposals of the 1975 Cambridge Cycleways Report which has provided a framework for the provision of cycling facilities up to the present day are outlined. The introduction of new cycling facilities in the early 1980s as a result of increasing accidents involving cyclists are described. Schemes introduced include shared cycle and pedestrian tracks, pelican crossings and cycle lanes. The involvement of a variety of organisations in implementing schemes is noted. Two schemes are considered in more detail - the traffic - signal controlled combined pedestrian / cycle crossing of the Fen Causeway, and the dedicated cycle lane and phase at the traffic-signal controlled junction of Hills Road and Brooklands Avenue. The most recent scheme has involved the creation of a new cycle route to divert cyclists from an area in the south-east of Cambridge with particularly high accident figures.
