Abstract

Basic information on the lengths of roads in Britain, the number of vehicles licenced, police strength, costs of road construction, costs of accidents and cost of road congestion are summarized first. The role the police played in the traffic system is discussed together with the influence that police activity has on driver behaviour. Experiments to study how driver behaviour can be influenced by evidence of police activity are discussed.
