Abstract

The congestion charge introduced in the city of London has resulted in some misinformation and myths. Congestion charging is not new, but existing examples are rarely cited in public debate about London's congestion charge. Londoners have given their views on a range of websites, but most people's reasons for objection are personally motivated and not concerned with the wider issues. Examples of existing congestion charging schemes are discussed: Durham, UK; Trondheim, Norway; Singapore; and Melbourne, Australia. The success of these schemes in reducing traffic levels is considered. Future UK schemes are outlined.
