The Canadian Strategic Highway Research Program (C-SHRP) is a cooperative effort jointly funded by the federal, provincial and territorial governments of Canada. Launched in 1987, C-SHRP is managed onbehalf of the sponsors by the Roads and Transportation Association of Canada. On the four technical research areas, a) asphalt b) long-term pavement performance c) concrete and structures d) highway operations, this paper will focus upon the activities which address pavement research. This is the area which, to date, has received the largest development effort within C-SHRP. Each Canadian province has at least one General Pavement Studies (GPS) test site - in Canada there is forty-five GPS test sections. The complementary aspect of projects in C-SHRP may be 1) to extend SHRP initiatives to represent more typically Canadian conditions 2) to improve the applicability of SHRP research through additional investigation of a specific aspect; or 3) to expand the overall scope of the research by pursuing a theme not included in SHRP. The complementary research projects encompasses all of these approaches.
