Abstract

The following is a list of the highlights of the seventeenth Canadian Multidisciplinary Road Safety Conference (CMRSC) and the Canadian Road Safety Youth Conference (CRSYC): Considerable emphasis was given to the Road Safety Vision 2010 goals in both conferences. Road safety is a multidisciplinary field, involving engineers, health care professionals, and insurance agencies, amongst other professionals and organizations. Topics of discussion at the CMRSC included new vehicle technologies, urban planning and road safety advertisements. During the CRSYC, participants were given presentations by their peers on the topics of Road Users in Canada, World Road Infrastructure, Vehicles, Enforcement, and Education and Awareness. Anne Snowdon, Francois Bellavance and Mavis Johnson gave presentations to the youth regarding careers in road safety. In working groups, the youth were able to discuss how to realize the goals of the Youth Declaration for Road Safety. Various youth initiatives relating to road safety were brought forth at the CRSYC, one of which was the Canadian Road Safety Youth Committee. The Canadian Road Safety Youth Committee will coordinate youth activities at the national and provincial level but complete details will be finalized at a later date. Special presentations were given to the youth participants by SMARTRISK and Mitch Dorge. The end of the youth conference featured a field trip to the Motor Vehicle Test Center in Blainville, where participants received a tour of the facilities, participated in anti-lock braking tests and electronic control stability tests, and observed a live side-impact crash test.
