Abstract

This short article describes the issues involved in designing standards for public transport operations and vehicle design which will improve their accessibility to disabled people. Topics discussed include: a) the acceptable levels of both risk and of protection; and b) increasing cost, which could deter provision of modified vehicles and services. Special attention is given to the provision of seat belts, and the problems of large transit buses.
