Abstract

A description is given of a residential area being built on the site of the former Munich Airport to house 14,000 residents and provide 5,000 jobs. The development will keep motorised traffic to a minimum. Earlier car-free schemes are reviewed. The development, which was the subject of a competition, provides high density housing with pleasant open spaces and restricts cars to the outskirts. Details are given of the facilities for a) residents with cars, b) residents without cars, c) public transport, d) parking, e) goods and special traffic and f) crime prevention.
