Abstract

The author gives a summary of more than thirty articles on car-pooling in the USA. Car-pooling has the ability to solve transport problems both in urban and rural areas. A car which is no longer used for homework trips, however, will not stand idle all day: car mileage will not be reduced to the same extent as would be expected from car-pooling arrangements. People switch to car-pooling because they have problems with their daily homework travel themselves, rather than for reasons of social interest. It is very important to isolate the target populations together with their specific transport problems. Aspects of costs and time seem to be very important. (Author/publisher)
