Abstract

This report describes a study into the definitions used, characteristics, and elements of different forms of carpooling. The research method consists of both a literature study, and of interviews with experts in the carpooling field. The different carpooling elements can be distinguished into four categories. These categories include: (1) the vehicle characteristics; (2) the carpooler characteristics; (3) the trip characteristics; and (4) the carpooling layout characteristics. It appears that a unambiguous and accurate definition of carpooling does not exist. This report defines carpooling as the frequently shared use of a car or minibus.
