Abstract

A literature review on carpooling is made. The following reference terms were used: ride sharing, carpooling, vanpooling and buspooling. American data on carpooling date from 1974-1975. For more recent American data, there are only smaller scale studies. Negative factors are staggering working hours, living in very remote residential areas, and the need of the car in the job. Positive factors can be the costs, comfort, income, parking, high-occupancy lanes, and social status. Mathematical models to forecast the effects of measures for stimulating carpooling are mentioned.
