Abstract

Carpooling is a relative simple and cheap measure to reduce car-use which can help to reduce congestion and other negative effects of the use of the private car. Parking-places for carpoolers can promote carpooling. Yet these places must be situated properly and well designed and equipped. This publication provides guidelines on the location, design and equipment of parking-places for carpoolers. Also information is presented on maintenance and the promotion of the usage of these places. It is important to select a strategic location to enhance the use and to prevent unintended competition with other parking-places for carpoolers. Once a location is selected the exact place and landscaping also are important. The site must have easy access by as well the car, by public transport as by bike. Care must be taken of a good technical design and the provision of facilities like a telephone booth, an information panel and a toilet. Apart from location, design and the provision also attention is paid to construction costs, maintenance, signposting and the promotion of the use of these facilities.
