The developement of performance-based mix designs for a highway and an airport pavement by means of the SHRP Superpave mix design system is described. Typical Superpave level 1 (volumetric) mix designs composed of a design aggregate structure (gradation) and a design binder content are illustrated, and compared with Marshall mix design results for the same materials. Refinement of the level 1 designs through the use of the performance-based tests in the Superpave level 2 and level 3 mix design methods is presented. Representative test data from the Superpave shear test device and the indirect creep and strength test device are shown, and the use of these test data to develop pavement performance predictions with the Superpave mix design software is demonstrated.
