Cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures : the VicRoads experience.

Abstract

The application of cathodic protection (CP) is increasingly emerging as a practical and viable technique worldwide in the rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures subject to chloride induced corrosion. As part of its efforts to better manage its bridge assets and enhance their durability, VicRoads has also embraced this new technology over the past six years. Different configurations/types of both impressed current CP systems and sacrificial anodes are being investigated for their suitability and effectiveness in both atmospheric and tidal/splash zone areas. Because of these CP works, VicRoads has gained valuable experience and understanding of the various aspects related to various aspects related to diagnostic investigations, design, installation, concrete repair, ongoing monitoring and maintenance requirements of CP systems and, more importantly, of what and how to specify for their application to ensure long term effectiveness. This paper addresses these major issues, outlines the various systems investigated, including their suitability for different applications, and discusses relevant design and performance criteria as well as international Codes of Practice on the subject. Important requirements of both a technical and operational nature that should be addressed in CP specifications by the asset owners or their representatives are also discussed. (A)
