Abstract

A study conducted by the Highway Safety Research Center at the University of North Carolina brings further evidence verifying the link between cell phone use and dangerous driving. Talking on a cell phone while driving elevates the risk of car crashes because using a cell phone slows down the driver's reaction time. There has been a great rise in legislative activity regarding cell phones and driving. Several counties and municipalities have passed restrictions requiring drivers to use hands-free devices. This article reviews the number of car crashes involving cell phones and statistics regarding cell phone usage during driving.
