Abstract

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) commissioned Peter Davidson Consultancy to develop the 2001 Census Matrix Tools software that uses the 2001 Census journey to work data, the National Travel Survey (NTS) and the Labour Force Survey (LFS) to produce work trip origin-destination matrices for planners. These matrices contain the number of trips to work from each home census output area to every workplace census output area in England, Scotland and Wales. Trip matrices can be split by time, mode of travel, mode chain or car availability. The reasons for using Census Matrix Tools are discussed and the development of the software is outlined.
