Abstract

A critical evaluation regarding the available evidence for the effectiveness of a supplemental, center high- mounted stop light as a measure to reduce the number of rear- end collisions in Europe and more specifically in the Netherlands, is given. The present review indicates that neither theoretical nor accident data analyses provide a clear- cut expectation that the introduction of a third brake light will lead to a reduction of the number of rear- end accidents in Europe.
