Abstract

The Georgia State Department of Transportation and the Georgia Institute of Technology conducted experiments at the Central Avenue exit ramp from 1-75 northbound in South Atlanta. Wrong-way movements were counted. The initial rate was extremely high at 89 movements per 30-day month. The following countermeasures were tried: 1-75 trailblazer sign, lowered DO NOT ENTER and WRONG-WAY signs, 18-inch stop bar, 8-inch yellow ceramic buttons, 18-foot solid head pavement arrow, wrong way car stop device, and reflective buttons around the arrow. Conclusions are that the ceramic buttons and large pavement arrow are very effective countermeasures.
