A PIARC survey was developed on Intelligent Transport System (ITS) applications in Economies in Transition and Developing Countries (EIT/DC) to propose some recommendations to EIT/DC decision makers, bilateral donors, Development Banks representatives, ITS equipment suppliers and consultants. Synthesis tables show which ITS applications are already in use in which EIT/DC country, and which countries are active at international level. Key recommendations are given, with examples extracted from the other paper describing case studies. Some of the subjects discussed include economic evaluation, resolving institutional issues, adaptation to local conditions, appropriate level of technology, progressivity of ITS deployment, sustainability, after-sales services, training and maintenance.
