Abstract

In order to increase traffic safety and the efficiency of the traffic flow on motorways, collective traffic management is operated with the aid of traffic management systems (VBA). For VBA, the possibilities of influencing traffic today are usually tied to local infrastructures, meaning that detection and display devices must be installed along the road. In the future, this information network can be optimized with the help of C2I technology. To date, first applications have been implemented to demonstrate the potential of cooperative systems in research projects. However, these primarily evaluate the technology used. A structured analysis of the potential from a traffic engineering point of view and the development of application scenarios as well as the integration of C2I into the traffic control are currently not available. This project therefore aims to develop the necessary work steps for the integration of C2I technology in the VBA and the development of recommendations for the practical implementation. The project will only consider collective traffic management scenarios. After a comprehensive presentation of the fundamentals both on the side of traditional VBA technologies and the current technical and functional standardization of C2I technology, the potentials of integrating C2I technology into traffic influencing will be analyzed. Parallel to the survey of potentials, possible applications for the integration of C2I technology into the VBA are defined. The expansions of the application cases and functions of the VBA by the integration of vehicle-side information from C2I can lead to a further automation and functional expansion of performed processes in the VBA. From the application cases, a common situation and measures catalog is drawn up, which represents the functional communication basis between the C2I technology and the VBA. Based on the potentials and application scenarios, requirements for the systems VBA and C2I, which must be met to implement these application scenarios from a functional point of view, are defined. These are finally structured into action recommendations and arranged in chronological order, so that a gradual introduction of the integration of C2I technology into the VBA becomes possible. The integration of C2I technology into collective traffic control can make a valuable contribution to increasing the precision of situational recognition, the range of situations and measures of collective traffic control, and thus better exploiting existing traffic engineering and traffic safety potentials.
