Abstract

Design features are classified according to (1) legibility; (2) viewing angle and readability; (3) colour; and (4) controls. Legibility is deemed the most important requirement for public safety displays; letter type and lamp spacing including dimming, and matrix configurations are dwelt upon at length. Viewing angle and hence readability depend on contrast, not brightness. Colour and its impact must be taken into account.
