Abstract

Gross weight and axle weight limits for heavy vehicles using New Zealand roads are set in the heavy motor vehicle regulations.Over the years there has been a continuing need for increase in these limits to utilise as far as possible the available vehicle sizes and the economies that result from increased payloads. A brief review of past changes in both the statutory limits imposed on heavy vehicle loadings and the design loadings used for road structures is provided.
