Abstract

This paper was presented at the `Advanced Materials' session. In 1992 the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) engaged EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd. (EBA) to undertake a study whose focus was the current Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) specification Asphalt Cements for Road Purposes (CAN/CGSB-16.3-M90). The final report, in three volumes, was submitted to TAC in early 1996. A significant objective of the study was to develop guidelines for users of the CGSB specification, to enhance the process for selection of the most appropriate CGSB asphalt cement for project specific applications. The specification that was published in 1990 was the result of a decade of development by eminent Canadian paving technologists. Unfortunately, it was published without benefit of a User Guide, which was one deliverable in the study. A concept was developed, at the request of TAC, for selecting CGSB asphalts based on maximum pavement temperature requirements. The concept that was developed utilized existing technology that had been reported by previous researchers. The EBA study was initiated prior to the publication of any final SHRP reports and products. The study was confined to conventional asphalt cements as they are currently specified in CAN/CGSB-16.3-M90. This paper provides an outline of the technical approach that was utilized to produce a User Guide that is intended to facilitate use of the CGSB specification. The Final Report submitted by EBA, at completion of the Study, entitled "Characteristics, Performance and Selection of Paving Asphalts" should be accessed for further information. (A)
