Abstract

Despite the tremendous gains made in the past 20 years in understanding and simulating the urban area, it is apparent that techniques are tied strongly to observations of present patterns and draw very little from a theoretical understanding of the city, it processes, or the forces that lie behind the observable phenomena. The work described here focuses on activities as the means for characterizing urban phenomena. Implicit is a model of the activity patterns of urban residents.
