Abstract

Due to more stringent noise regulations for motor vehicles in the near future, it is essential to have mastered the noise radiation of an exhaust system. To reach that goal, a development process based on the experimental characterization of the radiation factor of outer shells (catalytic converters, tube, silencers) has been carried out on an exhaust system, engine running. The results have then been compared with theoretical data, available for the noise radiation of tubes and baffled cylinders. The results obtained so far allow a prediction of the acoustic power radiated by an exhaust component knowing its surface vibration. (A)
