CHAUFFEUR : the European way towards an automated highway system.

Abstract

The author gives an overview on the CHAUFFEUR project which was established in 1996 within the Telematics Applications Programme of the European Commission (DG XIII). He presents the idea of electronic coupling of heavy trucks, describes the technical approach, and introduces the project activities in the field of system safety, cost/benefit analysis, and legal and liability aspects, which make CHAUFFEUR unique among the European undertakings in the field of Automated Highway Systems. Lastly, the CHAUFFEUR consortium is described, that is about to bring Automated Highway Systems to European motorways.
