The child casualty and fatally rates in Lancashire are higher than the national rate and western European rate. Possible contributory factors include the higher accident rates associated with urban environments, low socioeconomic households, and ethnic communities. A Kerbcraft road safety initiative was initiated to reduce child pedestrian casualties in Lancashire by improving the children's abilities to deal with their environment. The initiative consisted of a programme implemented in primary schools with instruction by the teacher, practical activity at the roadside undertaken by approved trainers, and follow-up worksheets in the classroom. The Right Start programme was introduced directly to schools initially into the lower socioeconomic groups within Lancashire County. It was estimated that initially it will cost approximately £6.55 per child to train each child.
