Abstract

This report: (1) examines the nature and extent of road accidents to children in ireland and compares them with figures in other OECD countries. (2) examines the medical effects of accidents on children, the kind and degree of injury sustained and the lasting effects that may ensue, as a result of the accident. (3) determines the exposure to risk of children by examining the developmental stages children pass through and their effect on children's ability to assess the traffic situation and behave in a safe manner. (4) based on the conclusion from the above, the report discusses possible measures to improve child road safety which may be applicable to the Irish situation.
