Abstract

The article notes that children are not small adults, and describes their traffic perception problems. It indicates a need for nationwide child pedestrian safety programs, as well as parent education.a film by the aaa foundation for traffic safety, 'children and traffic why they are different, ' explains many of the problems of children. Other projects that focus on child traffic safety are noted. Research shows that children cannot fully understand complex decision-making, such as judging distance and speed of a car or gaps in traffic. 'Watchfull willie, ' a successful preschool pedestrian safety program in milwaukee has reduced accidents among children under age four by 33%. It is noted that children interpret traffic signs literally, and are confused by the yellow light.
