Abstract

This article outlines improvements to the underground railway systems of London, Berlin and Bucharest, all involving vehicle manufacturer Bombardier Transportation. The London Underground public/private partnership is an upgrade project involving several sub-surface lines and one deep line, regenerating the infrastructure and acquiring new rolling stock. The new trains will have improved seating arrangements, propulsion, accessibility and maintainability. The Berlin metro system features underground, above ground and elevated lines. The current modernisation programme provides vehicles with improved passenger facilities, braking arrangements and environmental design considerations. New trains are equipped for conversion to driverless operation, which is currently being tested. The Bucharest metro network has four lines with extensions planned. New rolling stock is on order and renewal of signalling and train control equipment is scheduled. (Author/publisher).
